Project: Ars Ignis.&#38;nbsp;The poetics of destruction



	On 2 September 2004, the Green Palace in Weimar, where the Duchess Anna Amalia's Library (HAAB), a Unesco World Heritage Site, is located, went up in flames. Its citizens saw how a spark was capable of destroying not only one of the most beautiful libraries in Europe, but also part of its artistic, literary, and musical heritage. Their reaction was masterful. This heritage catastrophe shook the world, as did the fire that stalked Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral in 2019. It took three years for the building to reopen to the public, and twenty years later, restoration work and the recovery of the books are still ongoing. Among all the material archived after the fire, there are books and fragments that, for the moment, have not been restored or identified. In 2019 I had the opportunity to visit the storage rooms and the restoration department where this material, as valuable as it is fragile, is being worked on. I realized that there is a place where science can no longer reach, and where the language of art could bring new possibilities.

	Ars Ignis, in Latin, refers to fire as a creative element. That fire of which Heraclitus speaks, builder and destroyer. The same fire that creates culture and that is preserved in the hearth, in the house, in the first refuge. That fire of alchemy, capable of melting metals, which sculpture uses to give form. The same fire that, without control, is capable of destroying everything to the point of turning it into nothing. Integrating with its force almost any matter into the cycle of life. The second part of the title ‘The Poetics of Destruction’ alludes to the aesthetics of ruin, to its existential contemplation, to its cult, which only arises with the sufficient temporal and physical distance that separates us from the pain of loss and damage, so typical of German Romanticism.

	The project consists of two parts: ‘The black volcano’ and ‘The white archive’. Each of them is designed for each of the library's two current locations. The first is located in the Rococo room of the historic building built between 1562 and 1565, where the library was founded in 1691 by Count Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar and burnt down in 2004. And the second in the new library, in the Study Centre (Studienzentrum), which was opened in 2005 and designed by the architects Karl-Heinz Schmitz and Hilde Barz-Malfatti.The main idea of Ars Ignis is to offer new meanings to some of the fragments of the books, repairing them in another way. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the HAAB fire, a dual intervention was proposed, in which to use the material informed, ashes, and fragments of the burnt books. A material is as close to waste as it is to the relic.

	‘The black volcano’ is a small mountain of ashes from books that have been burnt. This sculpture has been placed on a plinth covered with lead. These ashes were collected in the restoration workshops. They are small fragments of burnt pages that were detached from the books during their handling in order to be restored and recovered. Fragments of words appear in some of them, in others it is impossible to read any of the contents. The piece rests quietly in the middle of the room, in the central axis, also corresponding to the center of the oval balustrade that crowns the space. This piece, conceived as a small mausoleum, took the form of a volcano, to link two historical strata: the story of the library fire with the travels of the Duchess Anna Amalia to Italy.

	Her fascination with Pompeii and Vesuvius. Anna Amalia was among the first women to embark on the Grand Tour. This is recorded in the diary of her lady-in-waiting Louise von Goechhausen. The volcano is accompanied by adjacent showcases in which elements from the Goethe and Schiller archives are presented. In them, visitors will find the Duchess's passport, watercolors by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe of Mount Vesuvius, drawings by the German painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein of the tomb of the Mammia Priestess, who painted the Duchess seated on the Schola, or circular bench, which presides over this funerary monument at the Herculaneum Gate.

	The ‘white archive’ consists of a cupboard with ten drawers, which has been placed in the middle of the central room of the new square library building. In each drawer are 10 pages that survived the fire, together with new stories. The material used for this piece is a small selection of the thousands of fragments of books that could not be restored and were selected from the extensive archive created by the restorers. To develop this literary and artistic piece, ten international writers were invited to write new stories. Among them were Alberto Manguel, Sonia Gentili, María Sánchez, Volha Hapeyeva and Javier Maderuelo. This piece is based on the joy of the discovery of the fragment and the freedom that archaeology sometimes offers.

Project: Arcadia! - IDILIAKÓS. Kewenig Galerie Berlin



	On the ceiling of the Galerie Kewenig in Berlin, a Baroque painting depicts a floral crown held by two putti—nude children characteristic of Central European Baroque decorative language. This motif, situated within the historical context of the Palais Happe o Galgenhaus (1688), refers to an iconographic tradition in which the vegetal garland or crown functions as a symbol of triumph, honor, and idealized prestige.

	In Greek mythology, Cloris—known as Flora in the Roman tradition—is the goddess of gardens, a terrestrial nymph associated with the care and regeneration of plants. Her conceptual presence runs through the work as a figure that connects the ornamental with the vital, the cyclical, and the perishable.



	The flowers used in this installation come from the remains of Stillleben (2018), which have been left to dry in the studio since then. Their materiality, marked by time, introduces a temporal dimension that contrasts with Baroque idealization. Chromatically, the muted tones of the dried flowers relate to the colors of the painted crown on the ceiling, establishing a visual continuity that links past and present.

	In the Baroque period—and already since the Renaissance—the vegetal crown, or garland, symbolizes perfection, eternity, and glory. In contrast, the dried flowers introduce fragility, the passage of time, and the death of the organic. A shift thus takes place: from the ideal image to matter in the process of disappearance.



	The act of fixing the flowers to the wall transforms their function. If, in the Baroque context, flowers decorate and glorify, here they become an offering. Pinned in place, marked by a violent and irreversible gesture, they take on a votive quality, close to the ritual and the funerary. Ornament becomes trace.Cloris Offering works as a contemporary pseudo-ritual in which nature appears simultaneously as an object of veneration and of loss.

The crown thus ceases to be a celebration and instead becomes a remnant, a relic, a material memory of accumulated time. In this transition, the figure of Cloris no longer embodies only fertility and blossoming, but also its inevitable reverse: withering, persistence, and transformation.

Project: Reflejar la casi nada

	Fugas is a series of minimal interventions of lines drawn with silk threads. Their trajectories invite us to escape from the exhibition space. They are made with gold and silver silk thread, to reflect the light on it and generate a kinetic movement of light when the spectator moves. Fugas is accompanied by ‘Alba Mobile’, a sundial that is activated for a short period of time and generates a fugitive halo of golden color.

	... As if it were a material translation of a beam of light, it marks a trajectory, a connection that offers a new exit, an opening to the folding and unfolding of the room.
All in the diagonal created by a thread in tension that reflects the light and orients us to sharpen our perception of what is in continuous mutability.

	Palafit is a sculpture located in a public space. It is an exercise in externalizing an intimate and profound feeling, a relationship with the land, with history, and with the urban strata that make up the silhouette of the city, of Valencia. It is located on the turquoise waters of the southern lake, in front of the Ágora building of the City of Arts and Sciences, which has housed the new Caixaforum in Valencia since 21 June.

	The sculpture has been positioned so that one side reflects the morning light and the other the afternoon light. In this way the sun activates the brightness of the two sides, accompanying the movement of the earth in its relationship with the sun. This phenomenon begins when the shadow cast by the cobalt-colored building is withdrawn and continues until the moment when the sun no longer touches it. At night it is black because it reflects the color of the sky. It has an opening at the top so that it can function as a sundial with its shadow. When the sunlight is at its highest point, and the shadow of the body is completely cast, the line of light that passes through this opening marks the axis of the sculpture and announces the highest point of the sun.

	Der Sonnentunnel is an ephemeral installation. It consists of covering the windows of the Berlin train station Tempelhof with a golden surface that can reflect the light of the sun during the day and night. As if inside the building lived the light and energy that gives strength to the trains to move. The installation will be visible to moving passengers, as it is a kinetic installation that is only activated by light and movement.

	The station in which this temporary installation has been planned is a place where the trains of the ring route, the S42 and the S41, which are almost non-stop, the passengers surrounding the city in this ring, cross in both directions, passing through this station, connecting east and west, sunrise and sunset. The installation is accentuating and makes the building visible from a distance, in order to highlight its existence and indicate its location.

	Stones have something eternal, immutable about them. A temporariness that has nothing to do with us. Although after I touched the sandstone, I must admit that I was left with sand on my fingers. Something about it stayed in me, revealing its fragility as well. It was then that I decided to transform that stone into sand. I used the mallet for sculpting which I hadn’t used for years. It is very beautiful when a stone fragments.

The pieces get increasingly smaller until they turn into dust. I sifted them with a wire mesh until I obtained the pureness of beautiful sand, which looked like earth powder.

	This tactile and visual relationship with the stone got me thinking about the strata beneath our feet, on which your house stands too. In particular, about what happened to the world before&#38;nbsp;we arrived, and, especially, what has been deposited in each of us after the experience of life. Strato&#38;nbsp;has something geological, but also something epidermal and vital.

Given its material nature, this piece is not only an object but also an experience. It will continue to change color when it comes into contact with the air. Silver will acquire the color&#38;nbsp;of the stone. In a creative, non-human uncontrolled act.

Silver is the soul that ages and is embellished with the passage of&#38;nbsp;time, which mutates its color, longing to reach the eternity of the stone.

Strato had always been there, on the back of an old mirror; in the memory of the silver mirrors that&#38;nbsp;hang in the Spiegelsaal (Hall of Mirrors) of Berlin, which still have the marks of bullets from the war on them.

	As a result of the torrential rain, the ground on the hill where&#38;nbsp;San Pietro in Montorio in Rome is located cracked open a few years ago. The damage done by the rain helped discover the characteristics of the subsoil on which the Academia de España en Roma stands, which&#38;nbsp;is home to Tempietto di Bramante (a chapel dedicated to the martyrdom of St Peter the Apostle). Among the superimposed layers of earth, a line of yellow sandstone soil appeared. The place where this sand is located is not somewhere that is accessible to everyone, but I have been there. For a few days, I sifted through the material that I had found as if I was a gold digger. I reduced the mesh size of my sieve, to obtain the finest sand possible.

	My mission was to ascertain its grades of gold. Finally, I discovered, whether it was due to the silica or just by magic, that it shone when the sun touched it with its rays. This sculpture is the physical proof of the name of this mountain: The Golden Mountain. The installation is a peaceful offering of the sand that the rain discovered. Now it has settled in the shape of a dune, under the celestial dome, and on a relief of Noah’s Arc; inside this emblematic building that was built by Bramante between 1502- 1510 in one of the courtyards of the Franciscan monastery, a homonym of Rome. Curiously historians think that in Roman times a private temple dedicated to Zeus Hadad, to the Egyptian Greek syncretistic worship, stood right here. Hadad was the god of thunder and rain that either made plants grow or destroyed them.

	Objects are in the world, we incorporate them into our lives.&#38;nbsp;We touch them every day and we collect them for their potential value or because we forget about them. When we die, all these objects just&#38;nbsp;sit there, and for a while, they stay in exactly the same place as where we left them. They stay there until other people move them, desacralizing&#38;nbsp;our last movement. From then on the objects live another life. Some end up in flea markets, acquired by other people who are unaware of their past, and they are incorporated into other lives. And only a few are rescued by poets, who see meanings in them that escape the eyes of others; and they sacralize them turning them&#38;nbsp;into works of art. That is exactly&#38;nbsp;what I did on Sundays in Rome. I went out to the Porta Portese market to rescue objects. I lived with them, and I observed them, to find new meanings in them. It is a very personal process of sacralization. It is related to the idea of numen, a word that not only refers to the divinity of classic mythology, but also the idea of the magical power that exists in the object, and the inspirational power that motivates the poet.

	The artist perceives, finds, and creates action that seems to talk to the other world. They visualize the ephemeral events, transforming spaces and objects that speak of the presence and the absence alongside those that we coexist with. They reproduce events and produce sacred objects, which are used as a lararium (household shrine), this ritual practice of the ancient Roman dwellings consisted in building small shrines where offerings were made. Sacrarium is the name given to the chapel of the Roman domus, where sacred objects were kept and domesticity was worshipped and in the exhibition room I have arranged objects and changed the space with them to create a room intended for domestic worship.

	A drawing of the sun that shone on the wall woke me up every morning. It came into my room without warning. And I had to wake up to watch this show. While I lived in studio 27 of the Academia de España en Roma, one of the highest points of the city, every morning and every evening I could see, during the four seasons of the year, how&#38;nbsp;the light of the sunrise and the sunset was reflected on the wall of my room. It was not any light, it was the light of Rome. The observation&#38;nbsp;of the movement of this drawing of light confirmed the imperceptible movement of the earth that moves around the sun, the passage of&#38;nbsp;my time, and my existence.

	The building offered its volume to the sun,&#38;nbsp;to catch it and draw this panel of&#38;nbsp;30 rectangles together. An invisible and transparent cage. I wanted to take this phenomenon with me. And confronted by my torpor Alba Mobile was born. It is a book object designed to carry this light to other places. It&#38;nbsp;is a series of inventions, objects, and instructions to be able to reflect the sunlight in any room. It is an exercise to observe the sunlight, an invitation to go back to the worship of the Roman god, to the Sol Invictus, and the practice of a spiritual exercise that connects us with the energy&#38;nbsp;of our star every day; recalling the ephemerality of the movement and the passage of time. The sundial that inhabits every home.
